Welcome to the 87Fund!

I am taking on a personal challenge this summer to give back to my community by creating a minority hockey scholarship to cover fees associated with playing on a Bowie Hockey Club team.

I love the game of hockey so much that it is my Number One sport!  I started playing ice hockey when I was in the 3rd grade with the Bowie Hockey Club.  I am currently playing for my high school.  And while I am not playing for the Bowie Hockey Club, I would like to promote the game and fund a minority scholarship.

  National Hockey League

Of the four major professional sports in the United States, hockey is by far the least diverse. Since Willie O'Ree of the Boston Bruins became the first black player in the National Hockey League in 1958, 38 black players have retired from professional hockey's highest level, according to NHL.com.

In 2012, 20 full-time NHL players, in a league of approximately 700, are black.

Maryland Hockey

In Maryland, hockey is not an officially sanctioned varsity sport in the public high school ranks. In Prince George's County, there are just two high schools club co-op teams, Bowie and Eleanor Roosevelt.

The Bowie Hockey Club, in its 41st year of existence, provides a variety of instruction from beginner to competitive travel teams for boys and girls ages 4 to 18.
